In my current job I was recently required to assist the production area (glassware screen printing). Now, talk about old school process. 40+years old machines, mini stows with enamel drippings that look like they were bought in the 80′s because of its color trend, enamels stack on a table in mini pots like a bunch of old hardened clay, staplers, metal mesh, giant metal cutting scissors, and a dusty table with a bunch of pieces of tape that will never come off. All this to print one maybe two color operation artwork in a small shot glass maybe a dozen.

It brought me back to the days when I use to draw and paint, and making my own canvas.

With a smile in my face it made me feel good to be able to create art again the old ways. It reminded me of how much it has evolved and how easy we have it these days thanks to technology. Now, I question myself is the process been appreciated by those who buy the product? Do they know what it takes to make a one color artwork to be printed in a small glass or anything else?

I want to use this experience to apply it to the modern age of graphic design and web designing experience. How often we find a client that wants a design immediately and cheap or even free? Why us artist do not get appreciated for the work we do and how we do it? It is a skill, a passion, and love of what we do. To take a piece of thought and implement it in a visual form is not just a click away. It takes time, and time is money in the business world. There are so many steps and procedures that need to be implemented. Research, file formats, color codes, set ups, and so much more that takes place to visually present a thought, and the list goes on and on.

Sharing my thoughts

Marcel D. Colón

As I research into the web design field to develop my skills and knowledge as a web designer/ developer there is so much more to learn and so much technicality to apply. Keeping up with new concepts and standards confirms that is a passion. I like the challenge of keeping up with the new standards and comparing my work to the rest. I also follow many video blogs from experience designers to sharpen my thought process. Honestly, is confusing sometimes since everybody has their own ways of doing things. But that’s the beauty. It lets you be more creative and explore new means.

So what I will do this year is do what I can the way I can with the tools that work best for me. The purpose is to satisfy the clients needs. It doesn’t matter what tools you use as long as they meet the needs and at the end the client is happy with the outcome of the project and of course how it looks and works.
